If you just invested in a smart thermostat, you’re most likely wondering how to go about the smart thermostat installation. A smart thermostat installation can be a scary and daunting task for those who don’t have an idea how to do it.

However, for those who know how to install a smart thermostat, it’s a quick and straightforward task. The good thing is, if you don’t know how to install a wireless thermostat or can’t find the time, it's something we can take on for you.

Installing a Smart Thermostat: 8 Easy Steps

If you want to give installing a smart thermostat a try, we’re here to help. Below is your quick and easy guide to installing a smart thermostat:

Before doing any work, ensure your thermostat is compatible with your wiring and system. Fortunately, most manufacturers provide compatibility checklists or tools online to help warrant their models work with your wiring.

Important: If at any point during the installation you encounter problems, we strongly encourage you to give us a call. The last thing you want is breaking your heating system. Keep in mind that you’ll be spending more troubleshooting a broken thermostat than installing a new one.

What you’ll find here is a general installation guide. Understandably, there might be slight variations from one manufacturer to another. As a general rule of thumb, consider it wise to read the owner’s manual or review the installation guide before taking on the task.

turn your Central Heating System off

1.  Turn Your Heating System Off

Prior to removing your old thermostat, make sure you turn off your heating system at the main circuit breakers. This is crucial so power if cut off and you won’t be able to accidentally short circuit any of your system’s electrical components.

Outdated, battery-powered thermostats can sometimes appear to be on even if the system has been powered down. To ensure everything is off, turn your thermostat and try to observe (and listen) if there are signs the system is running.

2.  Pop the Faceplate Off

To get the backplate and low-voltage wiring, you need to remove your old thermostat’s faceplate. With a little effort, it should pop right off. In case it doesn’t, don’t force it as there might be some hidden screws that you have to remove first. Look underneath to check.

It would also be a good idea to take a photograph of the wiring so you’ll have a reference you can use later on. Some thermostats come with stickers that are designed to label the wires. Use them before you disconnect anything.

3.  Remove the Backplate

Depending on the model, you might need to remove the small screws that hold the wires in place. In some cases, you’ll need to press small tabs using a pen to release the wires. You can also use a screwdriver to remove the backplate from the wall.

4.  Add a C-Wire

This is an optional process. If your system has a C-wire, then you can just skip this step. If it doesn’t, you will have to add another wire to serve as the common wire. It will be used to power the thermostat.

Some thermostat manufacturers come with an adapter to add a C-wire. You also have the option to purchase and install a third party add-a-wire adapter. Oftentimes, these adapters have specific instructions and you should follow them to the letter.

Important: If you feel like this is something you can’t do or it’s a bit too complex for you, don’t hesitate to give us a call. Otherwise, you might risk damaging your heating system.

Use the New Backplate as Your Template

5.  Use the New Backplate as Your Template

To mark the wall, use the thermostat’s backplate and a pencil. Drill holes at the marks where the backplate screws will go. You can also install wall anchors if needed. Ensure you pull the thermostat wires through the backplate prior to screwing it into the wall.

6. Reconnect the Wires

After the backplate has been attached securely, connect the thermostat wires to the corresponding terminals. If you used stickers to label the wires, this step should be effortless. Otherwise, you can use the photograph you took earlier to match the wires to the right terminals.

7. Install the Smart Thermostat’s New Faceplate

With all the wirings in their right places, you should be able to snap the new thermostat’s faceplate onto the backplate. If it won’t attach easily, don’t force it as there might be wires that are in the way. Check to see if there are wires, tuck them back into the wall, before attaching the faceplate again.

You can now turn on the breaker for your heating system. This will restore power to the thermostat and cause it to boot up. And yes, it boots up just like your laptop!

Connect Your Smart Thermostat to Your Wi-Fi

8. Connect Your Smart Thermostat to Your Wi-Fi

Now that your smart thermostat is on, it will guide you through a series of prompts so you can connect it to the WiFi and set up it’s accompanying smartphone app. This part can vary depending on your smart thermostat’s make and model. Just follow the prompts closely and you’re good to go.
